AN ASPIRING LEADER
It is with great pleasure and a deep sense of accomplishment that I, the chairman and founder, share with you the remarkable journey of Tembo Steels (U) Ltd.
Our story began with a vision to create something truly extraordinary: a steel manufacturing powerhouse that would not only set new standards of excellence but also contribute to the economic development of Uganda and the African continent at large.
Our team’s dedication has led to numerous milestones, from being the first company in the world to produce low-carbon steel from Cast Iron for Africa. It is also the first company in the world to produce 0.7 mm hot rolled sheets (HRC) from continuous configuration through direct rolling.

Sit on the charge and travel the whole route in 3D: down the kiln, into the furnace, along the caster and through the mill. Then tap a furnace, open up the works and build a city out of one bar.
WHEN THE GROUND MOVES, THE STEEL DECIDES.
Two identical frames on one table: the left one tied with a low-ductility bar, the right one with Tembo TMX® B500 CWR. Concrete cannot bend — steel can. Pick a magnitude and hold the table down to see why ductility matters: a brittle bar can fracture at the joints, while a ductile bar stretches and absorbs energy. Tembo TMX B500 CWR is a high-ductility rebar, suitable for earthquake-resistant reinforced-concrete design when specified by a qualified structural engineer.

Two tests, one bar, shown as an illustration. First the load: B500 designates a characteristic yield strength of 500 megapascals (MPa). Hold the rig to load the bar to 500 MPa; within its elastic range it returns to shape when the load comes off. The strength itself is measured in the laboratory by the tensile test, which pulls a sample until it breaks to record yield strength, tensile strength and elongation. Then the bend test: the bar is bent 180° around a mandrel and must show no cracks. The rebend test is a separate procedure, done to the method in the UNBS standard; the results for each size are in its UNBS test report.

- ISO 9001:2015 — certification of Tembo’s quality management system. The certificate copy, with its number, scope, certified sites and validity dates, is sent on request.
- ISO/IEC 17025 — accreditation of Tembo’s in-house testing laboratory for the tests in its accredited scope. It covers the laboratory, separately from the company’s ISO 9001 certificate.
- Thermex QST licences — held for both Lugazi and Iganga works
- UNBS product permits — with test reports for TMX sizes 8 to 32 mm, sent on request
- Open batch records — chemistry and mechanicals published for 100+ TMX batches, QR-linked from the tag on every bundle
